Karl, 20 - Depression, suicidal feelings

He comments "it was as though the colour had been sucked out of my world", this comes across to me like all the happy/positive things in his life became non existent in his mind. Just from seeing this quote I am glad I have chosen to do my images in black and white as it creates a serious mood, almost creates the feeling of like a dull rainy day which is kind of the feeling I want to get across.

He said "My mind had become like a torture chamber without any hope of reprieve. It was as though thousands of screaming, demonic children had entered my head and refused to leave." This is a powerful statement, it gives you a harsh reality to as how he was feeling and it was definitely very low and isolated. It gives me ideas for my final pieces, I feel like I need to show voices, like the subject is hearing things as I have come across this in a few articles and also experienced something similar myself so I will need to develop this idea.

He describes feeling like he was "trapped in a bubble" which I can understand the feelings of loneliness and isolation that he must have been feeling a lot of. I want to show isolation within my work by incorporating landscapes or large areas of emptiness in the images with my subjects to make the subject appear alone.

Alex - physical impact of Anxiety

What he describes: Racing heart and tension headache (waking him up), he describes that whenever he has a headache he fears the worst of a stroke as his father died from this. He thought he was having a heart attack but learn that he was having a panic attack. It shows how you do not have control over the panic that your body goes through with this mental illnesses.

He comments "So the way that I manage my condition now is through medication, and the way I look at it is essentially like an asthmatic.  They can’t control when their body has an attack. They always constrict, and they need their medication to help them. And it’s the same for me personally with my mental health disorder." I think this needs to be understood by the general public more as the stigmas behind mental illness is almost believed that the whole thing is fake when in fact it is an illness like any other requiring medication. I will try and show medication in my work if it fits in my series of images as I feel stronlgy about this aspect.

He said "knowledge is power" and talking about it is the best thing you can do. Instead of talking about it, for my project I am creating a series of images to show thoughts and feelings instead.

Hannah Shucksmith - Depression - Medication

She describes how she has good friends and family, eats well and does regular exercise, even tried therapy but needed extra help and so sought out medication. She felt like it was a big step because I assume this meant accepting that her illness wasn't controllable and was a part of her.  She wants to encourage people to take this step as "it changed me for the better".

Toby Brown - Behind the smile

He says he was in a "very dark and lonely place" after struggling with money problems whilst trying to support his family. He saw his doctor and was prescribed antidepressants. He started taking illegal drugs also and began to hear voices. He ended up in a drug induced psychosis in which he thought his make belief world was reality. He was labelled as a paranoid schizophrenic.

He created a series of work called "Behind the smile" in which he exhibited. The images included that of Amy Winehouse:

Toby at his exhibition.

He wanted to show behind the smile in his images. I can see how the eyes are darkened, lips chapped, sorrowful facial expressions and blur/colour have been incorporated to create these images. I get the sense of sadness, tiredness and vulnerability from viewing these images. I will add these kinds of expressions to my images and I want to add blurring to my images in some way to make them effective.
